Are you a beginner who is interested in starting a website? BearCompetence.com covers various topics about business, entrepreneurship and personal development but the main focus is helping people building an online business.
Even if you’re clueless about starting and running websites, don’t worry. It’s relatively easy these days to start a website or blog with a slick design up and running in a very short amount of time. In fact, if you read through this guide and follow the steps it shouldn’t take you more than 15 minutes to have your own website/blog up and running.
For what purpose and how can I actually earn money doing something I love?
Ask yourself, for what purpose do I want to create a blog for? Most people can atleast find one or multiple reasons.
- You want to share your stories(traveling, nutrition or whatever your interest is) and as a side bonus earn money while having fun.
- Building Credibility, networking, getting your name out there.
- Want to sell products, whether it’s physical or digital products if you have something to sell and you don’t have a website you’re missing out on potential revenue.
Have a all-in one to go place to list your resume and social media accounts.

Pick a Domain name and get a web host
Everything starts with a name. Have you already thought about which name you would like to have an ready to register it before someone else grab it? Some friendly advice before you decide on a name: Try to find a memorable name. Also, always try to get the .com. If the .com isn’t available I suggest finding another name. Use pen and paper and write what comes to mind after you’re done brainstorming, it’s time to pick a webhost and check if your name is available.
I’ve used many different web hosts over the years and the one that stands as being the best is Bluehost in my opinion. You might have seen the commercials on tv, Bluehost is now powering over 2 million websites and growing. The reason why so many choose Bluehost and give them positive reviews is because they do actually offer a great and affordable service. It’s the best choice for both new and seasoned bloggers.
Why using a blog platform is a bad idea
There are sites that offer a free and quick solution for people who just want to blog and nothing else and here’s why blog platforms suck:
- You are not allowed to put on ads and earn money while the platform put on ads on your blog and earn money off your traffic.
- You can’t even choose your own domain name.
- You don’t actually own your site, the platform provider owns it.
So basically the “free option” ends up being more costly in the end. It’s worth paying the small hosting fee and domain registration fee to have your own website real estate. It’s so cheap anyway to get your own hosting and domain name why anyone would choose the blog platform option baffles me.
Use a content management system
For those of you don’t know what CMS is, is the application that you run and manage your website with. These days the gold standard is using wordpress whether you’re a blogger, professional, running an ecommerce site. As I’m writing this there are now over 75 million websites worldwide that run on wordpress. The advantage of using wordpress is that it’s super easy to get started and you can have nice looking site in matter of minutes.
Get a premium wordpress theme
Now there are some OK looking free wordpress themes but if you are remotely serious about running a blog or commercial website you need to have a nice professional looking wordpress theme. Paying a one time fee to get a slick looking wordpress is worth every penny. I strongly suggest getting a Genesis theme by studiopress(btw, BearCompetence.com is running on a genesis theme).
